The FIGC has opened an investigation into Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon for allegedly using a blasphemous phrase on the pitch.
The incident was caught on audio during the game with Parma and seemed to be the goalkeeper, but the Lega Serie A Disciplinary Commission had not taken action because he was not on camera at the time.
Nonetheless, following the controversy over the last few days and concern the rules against blasphemy – considered the worst type of swearing in the Italian language – were not being applied consistently.
Only last week, Roma saw Bryan Cristante given a one-match ban for the same blasphemous phrase.
Now the FIGC has opened an investigation and, if Buffon can be identified as the person shouting that phrase, he will be given a one-match ban.
