Minute’s silence ahead of Serie A games

There will be a minute’s silence before kick-off in all tonight’s Serie A games after the cable car tragedy in Piedmont, which killed at least 13 people.

The incident occurred this morning, as the cable car had just begun its journey from the Stresa-Mottarone journey near Lake Maggiore.

The trip usually takes 20 minutes and reaches a maximum height of 1,491 metres.

According to the latest reports, one of the supporting cables broke and 300 metres from the top of the mountain, causing the cable car to plummet into the forest below.

At least 13 people have been declared dead and two survivors, aged five and nine, have been taken to hospital in Turin by helicopter.

The cable car route originally opened in 1970, was closed for maintenance between 2014 and 2016, and only recently re-opened in April after the COVID-19 lockdown.
