Chris Smalling was greeted by singing Roma ultras at the airport as he returned to the Capital following his transfer from Manchester United.
The defender had become a fan favourite during his season-long loan and pushed to make the move permanent.
After months of increasingly tense negotiations, the deal was finally done with minutes to spare on deadline day for €15m, payable over four years.
There would also be €5m in bonuses if Roma win the Champions League during that period.
“Nothing in life worth having comes easy,” Smalling told Roma’s official website.
“My head and my heart have always been in Rome. I’m delighted to now be yours. Daje Roma!”
Smalling arrived at the Ciampino Airport in Rome this afternoon, greeted by groups of ultras singing stadium chants.
He responded by smiling, waving and applauding their efforts, already wearing a Roma top.
